Stephanie fillbrandt
Owner/Principal designe
Stephanie credits her design inspiration from growing up in a household where her Mother constantly moved the furniture around and “redecorated” regularly. It wasn’t uncommon to come home and find a new floor plan or wall color. Her Mother fostered Stephanie’s creativity by encouraging her to customize her own room. As a child, graffiti covered walls made with soap crayons and hand-painted rainbow shades made her room a special space.
Stephanie grew up in California and the Tetons of Wyoming. She traveled to Europe at age 15 with her grandmother. This trip inspired Stephanie to study International Relations. After graduating from UC Davis Stephanie worked in publishing and high tech marketing on an international level. Stephanie went on to nurture her creative side and studied at UC Berkeley’s interior architecture and design program. It was a perfect fit.
Stephanie launched Marsh & Clark in 2006. The name was a nod to her family and their creative inspiration: Marsh from her Father’s side of the family and Clark from her Mother’s. Marsh & Clark’s first project was a major 26,000 sq ft renovation in Marin County. Marsh & Clark is now an established design/build firm that focuses on the work of design. The Marsh & Clark team loves the process of design and creating beautiful functional environments that withstand the test of time.
Stephanie lives in San Francisco with her two sons, husband and Yellow Lab Buddy.
chiya ewald
Lead interior designer
Chiya is a Bay Area gal; born in San Francisco, raised in Vallejo just across the Bay Bridge. Chiya grew up in a world of design; her mother worked in Fashion and her father was an architect and artist. She attended San Francisco State where she studied product design and developed an interest in furniture making
“I got to take shop classes which rocked my world. Really the whole field was interesting to me as I like to break things apart and put them back together, I have always been fascinated by the mechanism of things.“
Chiya became interested in interior design as soon as she realized that it was an actual job. Chiya has been with MCD for over 9 years.
“One of my favorite things is getting to draw custom cabinetry elevations or custom furniture. I love the challenge of making sure each piece is beautiful, functional as well as something a vendor could actually build, which I think is an aspect that sometimes gets overlooked. “
Favorite Project Ever: A private client in Marin was an education every day on the job. I was exposed to pieces from all over the globe: amazing art that I had only seen in text and really got to learn about the provenance of some amazing antique pieces.
Inspiration: My family, traveling & San Francisco
I love exploring the city with my daughter and husband, traveling and drawing and the never ending project of working on my own home. My husband can attest to the fact that I am on Pinterest way too much... it's an addiction really, but I love looking for new inspiration and I can't help myself but continue to source items for clients in my off time!
janel holiday huff
interior designer
Janel grew up in beautiful Santa Barbara. She studied art and then Graphic Design at the Art Center of Pasadena followed by drafting/CAD when she decided to move into Interior Design. Janel has worked in the Interior Design industry for 14 years. Prior to joining MCD she worked for Rebecca Bradley doing residential design in the Bay Area and beyond.
“I love interior design because it encompasses so much about what I love: art, fashion, current trends, etc. Interior design to me is like a live three dimensional collage project where you can build upon with texture, scale, color and lighting. It really gives an opportunity to educate and inform your audience about the client's personality and tastes. “
Favorite Project Ever:
“I love working on large scale projects where I can really get to know a client and their living needs. Projects where we get to custom create items such as lighting, furniture and soft goods are especially rewarding because there are so many artisans that we get to collaborate with. And the client is left with pieces that are truly unique. “
Inspiration: Art, music, fashion, current events and trends. Nature is my biggest inspiration. I call her my muse. It is in nature that I am constantly inspired by pattern, texture and color.
I love vintage Italian Vespas and Lambrettas. I have been riding for over 20+ years. I am a huge fan of hiking, being in nature. I love music/concerts....quick weekend getaways exploring California. Palm Springs is a favorite destination. My other huge passion is my yoga practice. I am currently obtaining my teaching credential and it is a practice that keeps me very grounded in a (at times) stressful world.
kyla channell
Design assistant
Kyla grew up in West Marin and graduated from UC Davis. MCD is Kyla’s first job in Interior Design.
“As a child I used to go on jobs with my Father who is a contractor and exquisite custom cabinet builder.”
Favorite Project Ever: Any of the homes with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge I love. Working on the job site is beautiful and the finished product even more so. Taking advantage of a view is key.”
Inspiration: Nature and the outdoors.
“I love the natural elements that come in designing kitchens and baths with the stone, wood and tiles.”
“Being in a beautiful environment makes you feel good and designing one the way you envision it makes that feeling even better.”
I love to get outside with my dog and Husband whether that’s on a mountain bike ride, trail run or hike. I like to challenge myself physically so we plan several trips a year to get our heart racing. Last year we did Half Dome and went rock climbing up vertical granite slabs in Tahoe. Next year will be Angels Landing in Utah and Via Ferrata in Telluride, CO.
